You ask a girl what she is looking for in a man and one of the most common response will be, “I want a guy that can make me laugh”.

Now there are probably more than a few funny guys out there that have been left to stroke the mic at their own lonely comedy club that would argue the “make me laugh” assertion as 100% bullshit, but unlike the Miracle Bra this is no lie. However as with most everything in the world of animal attraction it goes beyond just chicks loving a good chuckle.

Yes it’s true everyone likes to laugh. It is in fact one of first things we learn to do as infants not to mention a most effective way to relieve stress and has many well-documented mental and physical health benefits. However while everyone can laugh at funny not everyone can be funny. Have you ever heard the phrase “It takes a genius to amuse morons”? No! Well that’s because I just made it up but that doesn’t make it any less profound.

A quick wit is a sign of a highly developed intelligence and this is really what women are attracted to. Let us break it down to the primitive mind. Funny means smart and smart means higher chance of survival which equates to good breeding stock. Of course no one is actually thinking this, it’s all subconscious. You could also theorize that funny guys are more in tune with their own personalities and therefore “themselves”, and we all know that if you want to attract women you should “just be yourself”!  **cough-bullshit-cough** It could even be simpler than that. Most relationships are based on how the other person makes us feel about ourselves and in very basic terms if she’s laughing she feels good.

Now, an interesting question is why do guys not seek out girls that make them laugh? Is it because we subconsciously look for other attributes in women that would ensure survival? i.e. hip to waist ratio or mothering instinct. Perhaps smart women threaten many guys. I know some guys that fit this profile. Or maybe it is just not something society deems manly. It’s more likely that men tend to amuse themselves.

“Yo Dan, what do you look for in a woman?”
“You know Steve a nice set of tits is great but really I am looking for someone that can make me laugh.”

Back to the lonely comedians. As with everything there are exceptions to the rules so not every clever man will get the girl. While humor is a great ice-breaker there are obviously many many factors to human to human attraction. However form my observations men with a good sense of humor account for the majority of aesthetically mismatched relationships, meaning guys that are 6′s and under with women that are 8′s and up.

Writing this I am just realizing this is a hopeless article. It’s more a social observation than an advice column, though I never intended for it to be. Even understanding why women find humor sexy can’t make a guy funny. You either are or you’re not! I guess I can try and redeem myself with this advice; if you’re not funny AND unattractive you can still be rich. Money will pretty-up a guy for a good number of women. Now if you’re bland, ugly and poor… may God be with you.

We’ve discussed humor and sexual attraction but what about humor and sex? Most people don’t put sex and laughing together. Actually most guys prefer laughter and their nakedness not ever occur in the same room. You may want to reconsider however and do what I call The Chuckle Fuck. You won’t find this bit of advice in many sex How-To books. Making a girl bust up while having sex — particularly if she is on top — results in some amazing sensations for both involved so you may want to save your best material for the bedroom. Of course sobbing works as well it depends on what you’re into!
