Why Is Sex So Interesting and Sex Ed So Boring? This is the question being asked by the 2008 Sex::Tech Conference. They are looking for people age 15-30 to make a video outlining their sex education experience or how they would make sex education better for today’s youth.
The Sex::Tech Conference: Focus on Youth, is an Inaugural STD/HIV Prevention Conference focusing on youth and technology. It is being held in San Francisco, January 22-23rd, and is hosted by ISIS, Inc. and San Francisco State.
The aim is to find ways to get sex education to youth in a way that they will actually be educated. Part of that is bringing sex education up-to-date with technology in order to get the facts to kids, not creating fear through misinformation designed to scare them into abstinence. Another part is to ask the target audience themselves how they would like to be taught and what is wrong with the current system.
Young film makers can submit videos through DoGooderTV by January 7, 2008. First place wins a $3500 scholarship to the educational institution of their choice (or cash equivalent); second place wins $1000 cash; and third prize is your choice of a Nikon P5000, a Nintendo Wii or an iPhone.
Kids are going to mess around, it’s part of growing up. Acknowledging this fact and getting them the information they need in a manner they will absorb is critical to healthy and safe sexual development. The goals of the Sex::Tech Conference is a step in the right direction, how this will play into the actual education system remains to be seen.
