A Routine Death

Published on October 25th, 2011

If you were to die in this moment would your life’s purpose ultimately meet its demise?  The answer is probably yes. This is the reality for so many of us.  Many people are seeking a life of fulfillment.  It seems completely unattainable to most of us.  We drudge into work at 9 a.m. on the dot, or better yet 10 minutes after.  We make a pot of shitty company bought coffee and do anything we can to pass the time without working too hard or getting caught up in some project that might require us to use that all so precious brain power.  We hope to use our minds and our spare time to attain our own personal goals but somehow we get nailed into this dark coffin full of corporate bondage, with a tombstone above reading: “Condemned to a life of slavery”.

The key to overcoming this mediocre existence is to identify what causes us to get glued to this hypothetical flytrap on that rollercoaster of life.  I have taken the time to break down the fundamental defects that hinder us from moving forward, in the hopes that we can eradicate the behavior.  I have also laid out the steps to get started attaining the goals you would like to, in your life.

TREADING WATER:

If a vast body of water is your life, than treading water is doing nothing but keeping you from drowning. If you don’t set goals and only stay content in the idea that one day something will happen, you run the risk of nothing ever happening.

 WHY TREADING WATER OCCURS:

  1. Complacency.
  2. Becoming comfortable in a routine.
  3. Excuses: no time, no money, no energy etc.
  4. Not knowing what I want to do.
  5. Not enough education.

People get so caught up in the “preparation” to obtain a goal to escape their routine, that they become overwhelmed and shutdown before they actually attempt to make something happen.  There must be an element of preparation but don’t let all of the tasks at hand sabotage you before you even start.  Get back to the basics, the universe will help you get what you want out of life, but only when you are ready to help yourself.

 BREAK THE ROUTINE:

  1. Make a list of the things you want to accomplish in your lifetime (bucket list).
  2. Pick out one of the goals that are attainable and start brainstorming how to make it happen.
  3. Network- you may be surprised how many people have connections that are just waiting to be tapped into. Not to mention, most people genuinely want to help others succeed.
  4. Once you have a plan, take action. This process can take a while especially if you have to save money or get an education to accomplish the goal, but do not let that discourage you.
  5. After attaining one goal, set another and keep doing this until you have reached all of your goals on the list.
  6. Make another list.

Everyone has a different idea of what goals they would like to attain.  A goal could range anywhere from being married with 10 kids, to being a world traveler or even as simple as just learning another language.  We all have things we want to accomplish and have been blessed with life to go get those things.

This advice may sound all to simple, but once you have stepped outside of your routine and found freedom in accomplishment, there will be no turning back.  Always remember that if you are comfortable in your life, than you are not growing.  You can choose to create the life you want and dream of or you can simply settle to float through life just taking what comes. The only difference is in the end you will either be proud and satisfied or disappointed and full of regret.
