Interview with Justin Price
How long have you been taking photos?
I have been taking photos since I was teenager, but I have been doing it professionally for 5 years.
What is your background? Are formally trained as a photographer, self taught, genetically passed down?
In college I took two photography classes, but I started shooting all the time, whether it was people, objects or landscapes, I never put my camera down. I started working for a wedding studio as well. I learned as much as I could when it came to lighting, posing, composition and all the rules of a basic photograph. It took me years before I thought I was just an average photographer. Then I learned to break all the rules and that is when I really stepped my game up as a photographer.
As a photographer what is your motivation, what are you trying to capture?
My main motivation when I am taking a photo is capturing the best image possible. If I am shooting a model I want the photo of her to be sexy and I want her personality to come out through the photo. If I am shooting a wedding I want to capture a romantic moment in time that the bride and groom will always cherish. I am always trying new lighting techniques and poses and composition, so my photos are always different and my style is always progressing.
Who are your influences if any as far as other photographers?
My style of photography is very eclectic, I use everything from available light to a four light strobe system. I also use colored gels to enhance my lighting and give my photos what I call “a little more flavor” As far as influences, I would say looking at Rich Markese’s work really inspired me to come up with new and creative lighting designs.
What have you learned about yourself through photography?
I think being a photographer you really need to be out going, so you make the model feel comfortable. If you joke around with them, spend time with them on the phone before the shoot they will be more comfortable shooting with you and that will come through in the photos. I feel in the last couple of years I have become more comfortable with myself from my photography.
What have you learned about women from shooting models?
I have learned quite a lot about women from shooting models, everything from how to make them feel more secure with their looks and body, to dealing with problems of them not knowing what to wear. I have learned to be more patient as well, working with models. If you just accept that they will probably be running late, not have everything they need, and criticize themselves in the pictures then you will not get as frustrated as much as I used to get.
Where would you like to see yourself and your work in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to be shooting for some of the top magazines around, possibly Playboy or Maxim. I would like to still run my wedding studio and have a handful of photographers shooting for me. I just moved from Maryland to Florida and I hope to move around a coupe more times in the future. I also hope to be one of the most well known photographers in the world.
Final question; what makes Sylk Magazine so amazing?
Sylk Magazine is a place that features beautiful models, has great articles and really gives the reader something of substance. Oh and they were nice enough to do an article on me that is what makes Sylk Magazine great!
